Kunnen er twee mickeys tegelijkertijd bestaan? Mickey7 is een Vervangbare, en maakt deel uit van een expeditie van ruimte kolonisten naar de ijsplaneet Niflheim. Hij heeft een zeer specifieke rol in het team: bij elke gevaarlijke klus met grote kans dat een expeditielid het niet zal overleven, moet Mickey7 in actie komen. Gaat hij dood, dan wordt hij opnieuw gereproduceerd met bijna al zijn herinneringen intact. Het is zeker geen droombaan, maar toen de allereerste Mickey het contract tekende had hij weinig opties. Schuldeisers zaten hem op de hielen en hij moest zo snel mogelijk het zonnestelsel verlaten. Nu, na zes keer sterven, heeft Mickey7 leren leven met de bijzondere arbeidsvoorwaarden. Hij maakt zich klaar voor een nieuwe missie, en het onvermijdelijke gebeurt: hij stort in een afgrond. Het duurt niet lang voordat Mickey8 paraat staat. Maar is Mickey7 wel echt dood?
